  1. Heretical sect of Christians (associated with
  2. the Cathars) who flourished in S France near
  3. Albi and Toulouse during the 11th-13th
  4. centuries. They adopted the Manichean belief
  5. in the duality of good and evil and pictured
  6. Jesus as being a rebel against the cruelty of
  7. an omnipotent God. The Albigensians showed a
  8. consistently anti-Catholic attitude with
  9. distinctive sacraments, especially the
  10. consolamentum, or baptism of the spirit. An
  11. inquisition was initiated against the
  12. Albigensians in 1184 by Pope Lucius III
  13. (although the Inquisition as we know it was
  14. not established until 1233); it was, however,
  15. ineffective, and in 1208 a crusade (1208-29)
  16. was launched against them under the elder
  17. Simon de Montfort. Thousands were killed
  18. before the movement was crushed in 1244.
